description:

Collection of data and materials that emphasize rhythm (observable patterns / repetitions), culminating in an online database of time series data and rhythmic records. Additionally, this would explore different ways of documenting rhythm.

possible materials:

  1. rhythmic data: time series data, audio, video, still imagery that emphasizes pattern or repetition, architectural diagrams (stairs), time tables (transit), aerial photography
  2. tools for capturing rhythm: loggers, tally counters, pedometers, stethoscope, code (onset detection / computer vision)
  3. artworks - notes, plans, scores, diagrams, physical fragments of installation or performance, code

Who might this collection be for?… to do what?

  • researchers / artists / anyone interested in better understanding rhythms as patterns or products of overarching systems, and how the rhythms we experience can be shaped or distorted by such systems.

How you will document/collect?

  • rhythm database: This initial collection explores experimental approaches to documenting rhythm. By inviting several artists to contribute, it aims to present a range of viewpoints and techniques that capture rhythm as a pattern or byproduct of overarching systems. Contributions will also include a supplemental information form including information detailed below.

What will be your collection scope? (create / define the container and its limits)

  • Directions: Document a rhythm. Documentation must include some form of analysis. Analysis could be in the form of an artwork, drawing, description, data, i.e. something that shows segmentation of events in time.
  • Things to consider: What overarching system is the rhythm a part of (environmental, societal, political, internal, etc)? Is the rhythm shaped or distorted by its system? Are there other rhythms present? If so, is this rhythm in-sync or out-of-sync with other rhythms?
  • Additional info:
    - gps/location data
    - date/time of capture
    - additional media (photo/video/audio)
    - supplemental info / descriptions, perhaps sensory descriptions that could not be easily captured i.e. scent
