I am considering doing my long-term archival project on music documentation in Los Angeles. How can we remember concerts, programming, DJ sets, radio shows, via ephemera? I am interested in collecting physical set lists, recording audio at shows that occur in Los Angeles, interviews and conversations, printed photographs, cigarette buds, a empty white claw can…
As a performer myself, I often leave a show with videos of that performance. I wonder, in years from now, what will be more meaningful in terms of remembering this performance process?
This collection is for Los Angeles based artists, music researchers, musicians, performers, music enthusiasts, radio hosts, for you and me.
Things I will need to develop this collection:
- patience
- coffee break + maybe 1-2 cigarettes
- music to listen to that isn’t too disturbing
- materials, tickets, old setlists, a yelp review from El Prado
I will document this collection with physical ephemera that I have collected over the years and that I plan to collect. I will go through my personal archive at home to find old ticket stubs, written set lists, and other related materials. I will also use digital archiving to create this box. This means pulling from online radio mixes, old demos, and images and videos that are kept online.
The collection will document the contemporary Los Angeles music scene specifically around my own music project untitled (halo) which began post pandemic inspired by LA’s own dingy wine bar El Prado.
